There are 956 faculty at MIT, including professors of all ranks and departments. They paricipate in over 60 interdisciplinary laboratories, centers and programs. They are active in environmental programs such as the Laboratory for Energy and the Environment, the Center for Environmental Health Sciences, the MIT-WHOI Joint Program, the Ralph M. Parsons Laboratory, the Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research, the Joint Program on the Science & Policy of Global Change and the Center for Global Change Science.
To measure the involvement of faculty, we looked at number of faculty participating in each of the above programs. There were a total of 176 faculty participating. The chart below summarizes the distribution of faculty between the programs.

After looking at the lists of faculty involved more closely, we noticed that many names appeared more than once. In fact, many of the faculty listed participated in two or more of these programs. After making an adjustment, we discovered that there were only 127 faculty members participating in these programs. This accounts for 13% of the total faculty at MIT. However, as one professor pointed out, even this estimate is inaccurate. Some of the faculty listed are not active in the programs or centers of which they are listed as members.
