There where 3,605 classes offered for the Fall and Spring 2002 terms. Out of the 3,605 offered, 175 subjects contained environmental content (themes, case studies, examples). This shows that less than 5% of the total course curriculum offered this academic school year where environmentally related.
We ran a search for the word "Environment" in the subject listing site to determine which classes offered had Environmental content. On inspection of the search results, we found that many of the courses had little or no pertinent content. Through this search, we did find as a result the Laboratory for Energy and the Environment which undertakes to identify courses offered each academic school year that contains such content. To find the total subjects offered, we ran a "null" search at the subject listing which identified all subjects offered.
An undergraduate takes an average of 32 classes during his or her time at MIT. With a total of 3,605 classes to choose from, the probability a student will take an environmentally related class drops considerably when you consider only 4.9% of the classes are environmentally relevant.
